I Dream of Aquatic Apes (click to listen on Bandcamp)
EP released 11th December 2025 on Circle Dance records. CD005.
A group of tracks, three by Kate Huggett, one by Hildegard of Bingen, with words from texts by Elaine Morgan who wrote about the Aquatic Ape theory. These songs are about the power of really old feminized voices, and bonds of magic, in the water and on the shore: Birthing practices, singing in monastery gardens, unwritten knowledge, bodies in and out of comfort.
The first track, Kinderly is me rising and me falling, was written for the film Gossip (dir. Hannah Renton 2023) and was the inspiration for making this EP. The film has been released by Birthrites and you can watch it here: www.birthritescollection.org.uk/gossip-fullfilm
mixed by Kate Huggett and Nicholas O’Brien at Upcycledsounds. all tracks mastered by Rupert Clervaux. cover photo by Kate Huggett, artwork by Joe Nava

Just go on loving this like water even when there’s none

Voice recorded in Holy Trinity Blythburgh, Suffolk and with field recordings from the perimeter of Sizewell B power station.
A poetry-song collaboration that follows a person down the East coastline. Somewhere behind the lyrics are people who once picked things for a living – herrings, stones, and fruit and now find themselves working and singing in the shadow cast by a dome.
The melodies come loosely from ballads that moved through Suffolk. All the non-vocal material of the piece comes from recordings made of the beeps and drones of the power station.
This was a radio commission from the BBC New Creatives Scheme with support from NTS Radio and the ICA. Initial development also with the support of EFDSS and Britten Pears Arts.
